Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Uco, textile manufacturer, has announced the closure of its facility in Gent (manufacturing denim) with the loss of 380 jobs. The production activities are likely to be offshored to Romania while business and administrative units remain in Gent. However, according to the trade unions, these two units may close as well. The Gent facility currently employs 400 people in its manufacture, business and administrative units. The closure is attributed to the greatest exposure to foreign competition in the textile sector and the increase of manufacturing and energy costs.
