Description
Saab is, next to Volvo, the main manufacturer of cars in Sweden. Recently, the sales of Saab cars have decreased rapidly around the world. For instance, in USA alone, the sales of Volvo and Saab combined went down by 50% in August compared to last year. This has resulted in Volvo PV making job cuts (factsheet 11238) and now is the turn of Saab. The management has announced that by the beginning of December there will only be one shift at the factory in Trollhättan, as compared to two today. That means that 800 out of 4000 jobs will be lost. Also, the production was completely shut down during 10 days during the period between October 2008 and January 2009. This affected the entire workforce.
In 13 March 2009 Saab Automobile announced that it has to cut another 701 jobs at its site in Trollhättan and that the job losses will be implemented by the 17 April 2009. Due to the severe financial situation the company was suffering from, because Saab was (and still is) undergoing a company reorganisation, it was this time possible to dismiss the employees in such a short period of time. 646 blue collar workers and 55 white collar workers are affected.
