Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Vetrosilex, a manufacturer of glass containers for food and beverages, belonging to the Owens Illinois group, is to close its plant in Castelmaggiore, in the province of Bologna, with the consequent loss of 102 jobs. According to the company, the closure is mainly due to the drop in the demand. Consequently, the company has decided to move mass production to its other plants located in Italy.
The trade unions reacted to the company’s decision by going on strike. Moreover, the trade unions are trying to involve the local authorities in order to find measures aimed to avoid the redundancies.
Owens Illinois is the largest manufacturer of glass containers in the world. It has over 100 manufacturing plants on five continents and employs nearly 30,000 people. In Europe, Owens Illinois has operations in 11 countries, including 39 plants and 78 furnaces, and specializes in glass packaging for food and beverages.
