Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 29 August 2008, the German subsidiary of UCB, a large Belgian manufacturer of pharmaceutical products, announced the reduction of its staff in Monheim by 570 persons. Around 200 jobs are to be cut in research and development, 230 in sales and 140 in internal services. The restructuring programme is being launched to overcome the adverse impact of price competition resulting from the imitation of UCB's drugs. Currently, 1,650 persons are employed by UCB at its German site in Monheim, North Rhine-Westphalia.
