Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Pharmesutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced the closure of its factory in Crawley with the loss of almost 500 jobs. The job losses will be implemented by the end of 2011. The company has blamed the closure on "declining volumes, regulatory delays and patent expiries". Staff at the site currently manufacture prescription medications including medicines to treat Parkinson's disease, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, bacterial skin infections, depression, and hypertension. Consultation with trade unions at the site are due to start immediately.
