Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
British Imperial Tobacco announced the closure of the Berlin manufacturing plant with the loss of 420 jobs by the end of 2011.
The company also announced that out of these 420 jobs 90 jobs will be relocated to the plant at Langenhagen, Lower Saxony, and another 80 jobs will be moved to Hamburg.
According to the employee representative on the supervisory board, the workers pay a 'political price' for the merger of Altadis and Imperial Tobacco as management wants to evenly distribute the closures in Europe.
Imperial Tobacco employs a workforce of 2,000 in Germany. The Berlin plant was at risk of closure five years ago, but it was saved due to political intervention. As the plant manufactures for the Eastern European market, the workforce has been growing over the last years.
