Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The management of the French branch of the Dutch beer brewer, Heineken, has announced a reorganization plan that foresees some 188 job cuts and the closure of a Fischer brewery based in Strasbourg's suburb in December 2009. Four main sites are concerned by the reorganization: one in Alsace, where 126 jobs are planned to be cut, one at Mons-en-Baroeul (Nord), where 62 jobs will be slashed, the Fischer Brewery, and later the plant at Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais), which will probably be sold.
The unions’ representatives attributed these job cuts to the recent acquisition of Scottish & Newcastle by Heineken and Carlsberg.
In addition, the group is planning to invest EUR 124 millions within 3 years in order to relaunch its production plants.
