Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Qimonda, an affiliate of German Infineon and a global memory supplier, plans to cut 350 jobs in the administrative division of its plant in Dresden. As of May 2008, there is no information on when the job losses will be implemented by. The restructuring will not affect jobs in R&D and manufacturing. The job cuts are part of a large restructuring aimed at reducing the global workforce of 13,500 by 10% to compensate for severe financial losses. As of May 2008, there is no information of any planned job cuts affecting other countries. SolarWorld, a manufacturer of photovoltaic appliances, has announced that the company will offer new jobs to redundant workers at the Solarworld plant in Freiberg (East Germany).
Qimonda currently employs 3,400 in Dresden. The company operates in three continents and has six major R&D facilities, including its lead R&D center in Dresden. Qimonda is the second largest global producer of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) for a wide variety of applications.
