Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
ON Semiconductor is to cease production of electronic chips in its units in Piešťany with a loss of 400 jobs. The start of dismissals is planned in May 2009 and all production plants will be closed by the end of 2009. Production will be outsourced to the company’s units in other countries. According to the president of ON Semiconductor, Keith Jackson, the delocalisation is caused by implementation of long-term company business strategy aimed at keeping sustainable competitiveness in the global market. The multinational company has been operating in Slovakia since 1999.
Dismissals started earlier than were originally planned (in May 2009), and 117 workers were laid off already in February 2009. Production is to be delocalised to the Czech Republic and China.
