Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Panorama Ipermercati, one of the main hypermarkets chain in Italy, is to cut 226 jobs. The company has hypermarkets and supermarkets in several regions, such as Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Piemonte, Toscana and Veneto. It has around 4,000 employees. At the beginning of May, the company decided to rescind the company-level agreement and to reduce the total workforce. The redundant workers should be 226. The company’s decision is mainly due to the economic crisis that has occurred during the last year.
The trade unions reacted to the decision by organising a strike scheduled for the 23rd of May in order to find ways to avoid the redundancies envisaged by the reorganisation plan.
The Panorama Ipermercati belongs to the PAM Group, one of the main large retail distribution companies in Italy. The Pam group covers different market segments: soft and hard discount stores, hypermarkets, and a restaurant chain. It controls several brands and it has around 11,000 employees.
