Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Fujitsu, a Japanese company specialized in semiconductors, computers and telecommunications, has announced that it is to cut 140 jobs from its factory in Solihul. The company has decided to consolidate its manufacturing in the USA but will continue to retain assembly, test and other activities in the Solihul plant. It proposes to move printed circuit board manufacturing from Solihul to Richardson, Texas to improve the companies efficiency. Of the 700 staff at the site 140 jobs are set to be lost, of them 30 staff are expected to be redeployed. The company has started a 90 day consultation exercise. The union has said that staff are shocked by the unexpected move. As of April 2008, there is no information on when the job losses will be implemented by.
As of May 2008, the Communication Workers Union has announced that workers at Fujitsu, Solihull have voted to take industrial action over plans to cut jobs. No date has been announced for the planned strike action.
