Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Siemens Transportation Systems (STS), owned by German Siemens, has announced the loss of 150 jobs following a considerable reduction of production that may lead to the closure of the company. The restructuring programme is expected to be initiated in May 2008. As of April 2008, the reasons of the restructuring are unknown. STS is a producer of railway carriages and employs 360 people.
The latest information as of 2009-01-21 says that Seimens decided to close down the facory. All the 322 employees, which are curently employed by STS, will lose their jobs. The closing down of STS is targeted for end September 2009 and is part of the restructuring of Siemens' capacities in this area. An attempt was made by Siemens to sell STS to a Korean investor but was not successful.
