Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
BAE, a global company engaged in the development, delivery and support of advanced defence and aerospace systems, has announced that it is to cut 600 job in its plants at Brough and Woodford. The 466 losses at Brough follow BAE's loss of a contract to supply 35 Hawk trainer jets to the United Arab Emirates. The company has announced that the majority of job losses will be in the areas of engineering, but will also affect support staff. The 134 Woodford job losses will also be concentrated in engineering as BAE changes its focus from manned to unmanned fighter aircraft. The company announced that the division was overstaffed given the workload for the engineering team. The job losses will be phased starting this year and continuing up until 2010. Unite, the trade union representing staff at BAE has announced that it will oppose compulsory redundancies. It cited rising competition as one of the causes of the job losses but argued that the UK government should safeguard the UK's aerospace industry.
