Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The car manufacturer Nissan announced on January 4 that it was preparing a dossier for reducing employment which could lead to the dismissal of 450 workers in its unit in Zona Franca Barcelona. The following week, after negotiations and agreement with unions, it qualified the announcement saying that it had extended the period of acceptance of voluntary redundancies until December this year and that so far 111 workers had accepted voluntary redundancy.
Additional information on negotiations between the management and unions and further workforce cuts in car industry is available on the European Industrial Relations Observatory (EIRO).
