Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
IVAX Pharmaceuticals has announced that it will create 165 jobs over the next five years in Waterford. The EUR 65 million investment will enable the Waterford pharmaceutical firm to more than double both its inhaler and tablet manufacturing capacity relating to the relief and prevention of asthma. The asthma products manufactured in Waterford are exported worldwide. The SIPTU trade union has described the investment as “a real vote of confidence in the skills and commitment of the existing workforce”. According to the union, “as IVAX Pharmaceuticals is a highly unionised plant, their expansion plans dispel the myth that unions are anathema to business. It proves that management and unions can work together”.
