Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Quebecor World, a firm that operates in the printing sector, has announced that it is to close its site in Corby in Northamptonshire with the loss of 300 jobs. The firm entered receivership in January 2008, yet it had been hoped that a buyer would be found for the site. A representative from the trade union Unite said that it was unfortunate for staff given the potential problems they would have in finding alternative work in the area. Quebecor World’s financial problems are a result of difficulties faced by the firm’s Canadian parent company. As of February 2008 there is no information on when the site is to close and the job losses are to be implemented.
