Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
TeliaSonera, the Finnish telecommunications company, announced that it is to cut up to 165 jobs in its Mobility Services unit as part of an internal restructuring involving the adoption of a new operating model to respond more rapidly and efficiently to the changing customer needs and the changes in the market. As of January 2008, there is no information on when the job cuts will be implemented by.
The company started personnel negotiations in its Mobility Services unit. In addition, negotiations with the employee representatives will be also launched to discuss the changeover to a new operating model in Finland. The negotiations will affect around 900 employees of Mobility Services Finland.
According to the practice followed by the company in Finland, the restructuring will not involve compulsory dismissals but redeployment of employees. A Competence Pool offers training and on-the-job training to employees. At the Competence Pool, the employees can seek for a new job and redeployment during a longer period than the normal period of notice. The company has good experiences of the use of the Competence Pool model in such situations. In 2007, 277 employees were transferred to the Competence Pool. Hundreds of vacancies were filled internally, of these around 80 from the Competence pool. Furthermore, 438 new permanent employees were recruited externally. At present, there are 37 employees at Competence Pool.
In the light of this restructuring, the function-based organisation will be abandoned, and the aim is to establish a strong unit focusing on customer relationship management. The new operating model and the related reorganisation are set to clarify the operations and eliminate overlaps. Other measures taken to achieve a more efficient and customer-oriented way of operating include broader job descriptions and responsibility areas.
