Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Eridania-Sadam, the group leader in the Italian sugar industry, has announced that it is to cut 170 jobs with the closure of its plant in Jesi, in the province of Ancona. The company attributes the decision to close its plant to the rising operative costs and the insufficient availability of raw materials (that is sugar beets).
The sectoral trade unions reacted to the company’s decision by organising a protest demonstration in Ancona. The trade unions and the national and local political authorities are worried about the negative effects that the closure of the plant located in Jesi could cause to the producers of sugar beets and to the business of the haulage contractors who transport the sugar beets to the sugar-refinery. In order to avoid the closure of the Eridania-Sadam plant, the local political authorities, the representatives of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies have planned several meetings with the company and the trade unions for the next days.
The Eridania-Sadam is the Italian group leader in the sugar industry. it has seven plants in Italy. The company belongs to the Maccaferri group, a holding that operates in several sectors.
