Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Swedish group SKF AB, the world's largest producer ball bearings, has announced that it has decided to close its manufacturing facility in the Fontenay-le-Comte in France in order to streamline production and improve efficiency. It is expected that 320 workers will be offered employment in other French sites of SKF AB, and a further 200 jobs will be lost between July 2008 and December 2009.
The CEO said these are the most important steps in the group's ongoing activities to reduce costs and improve efficiency in its operations. The Company has over 100 manufacturing sites and also sales companies in 70 countries, supported by approximately 15,000 distributor locations.
