Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Dow AgroSciences Co., a multi-national group that operates in the chemical sector, has announced that its subsidiary Dow Chemical is to close its site in Lauterbourg with the loss of 171 jobs. The plant in Lauterbourg manufactures fertilizers, and is due to close in December 2009. The job losses at the site will be implemented between January and December 2009. Management at the group attribute the closure to the level of competition within the sector.
The closure of the Lauterbourg plant is part of a global restructuring programme by the group. The group, which employs approximately 50,000 globally, will cut 1,000 jobs at sites across the world. The group attributes the global restructuring programme to the need to increase its efficiency.
