Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Danisco Sugar Kedainiai, a manufacturer of sugar and the Lithuanian subsidiary of the Danisco Sugar group, has announced that it is to close its site in Panevezys with the loss of 100 jobs. The closure and the job losses will be implemented by the middle of January 2008, and the firm has stated that the reason for the closure is the need to improve the competitiveness of the firm. The firm operates one other site in Lithuania, in Kedainiai, and all of the firm’s production in Lithuania will now be concentrated at the Kedainiai plant. The firm has also stated that it will work closely with employee representatives in order to offer a range of support measures to those employees affected by the closure.
