Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Rolls-Royce, the multi-national engineering group, is to close its site in Bootle with the loss of 200 jobs. The Bootle site, that produces turbines for the oil and gas industries, is due to be closed by the end of 2008. Production at the Bootle site will be moved to a location in the U.S. Management at the firm have attributed the closure to high costs and the current strength of the British pound against the U.S dollar. The firm has also stated that it has discussed alternatives to the closure of the site but that no viable long-term solutions were found. The British union Unite has said it will launch a major campaign to save the plant and will call for support from government ministers, local MPs, and the energy industry clients the plant serves. Debbie Brannan, Unite regional officer, said: 'We are shocked, but not surprised by the company's plan to close its Merseyside plant but this is the beginning of our fight back, not the end. Our campaign to save the plant will reach out to Westminster and to industry and we will also be seeking the council and local people's support to keep the plant going. We will do everything in our power to stop the closure of the site and we ask the people and politicians of Merseyside to join us in doing the same.'
