Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Gem, a call centre firm that operates in Belfast, has announced that it is to create 500 new jobs at its existing site in Belfast by December 2007. Gem provides call centre services to a number of corporate clients, and has stated that although many of the new posts will be part-time it is expected that a proportion are likely to be converted into full-time posts. Philip Cassidy, Managing Director of the firm, stated that the job creation was attributable to a 40% increase in the firm’s revenues this year. Mr. Cassidy also stated that in the call centre sector there seemed to be a move back to Europe from Indian contact centres:
'I think there will be a place for the Indian contact centre, but what has happened is that everything has gone out there, when there is a particular contact that suits that environment and the more complex type of transactions or contacts really suit the UK market and that's where we're able to grow,'
As of October 2007, there is no information on how many are currently employed at Gem’s Belfast site.
