The Ministry of Defence, the defence department of the UK Government, has announced that it is to cut 1,000 jobs in its London head office and relocate a further 800 jobs from other locations in London. 3,000 are currently employed at the London head office, and the job losses at the head office will be implemented by 2010. Administrational, finance and personnel staff will be affected by the cuts. The UK Public and Commercial Services Union has condemned the job losses, and has stated that new senior jobs are being created whilst other posts are being cut back. General Secretary Mark Serwotka said:
'It is difficult to see how cutting 30% of staff and moving 800 out of London will not have a damaging impact. Staff will be further angered about the disproportionate impact the cuts will have on the lowest-paid, especially when they see the creation of new senior positions on six-figure salaries.'
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said that more resources would be released to the front line by 'streamlining' the ministry's head office to ensure it was as efficient as possible.
It said: 'The streamlining programme will simplify the Ministry of Defence's organisation and work, ensuring the ministry is focused on strategic tasks and better able to respond to priorities. Other parts of defence have undergone similar reforms.'
