Description
Swindon Borough Council, a local government employer that operates in the South-West of England, is to cut 200 jobs. The Council employs 8,500 and has attributed the job losses to the need for greater efficiency. The Council's 4,000 school employees and waste operations staff will not be affected and no services are expected to be at risk. However, vacant posts will be cut and short-term contracts reduced amongst the council’s 4,500 remaining employees.
Swindon Borough Council Chief executive Gavin Jones stated. 'Like any well-run organisation, we have a duty to constantly challenge our costs and assess if we can do more with less… We are obviously keen to minimise the effects on our staff and we believe that we can achieve these savings on a voluntary basis. We have provided a scheme to make this as attractive as possible to those who wish to consider it. We have also developed a talent management programme so that we can develop our workforce to their maximum potential.'
