Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Flextronics Manufacturing France, a producer of accessories for mobile phones on a sub-contract basis and a subsidiary of Singaporean group Flextronics, has announced that it is to close its site in Chateaudun with the loss of 510 jobs. Management at the firm attribute the decision to close the site to the loss of contracts with two key clients; Alcatel-Lucent and Nortel. Alcatel-Lucent is bringing back in-house work that Flextronics currently does for it at Chateaudun, whilst Nortel is relocating to Poland. Of the 510 workers employed at Chateaudun, 360 are permanent staff whilst 150 are on fixed-term contracts. The site is to close between October and December 2007.
