Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Hilton Reservations & Customer Care, a supporting function of the hotel operator Hilton Hotels Corporation, is to close its site in Tallinn with the loss of 120 jobs. The site is scheduled to close on December 20th 2007, and the work carried out at the Tallinn site is to be 'offshored' to Hilton Reservations & Customer Care sites in other states that have yet to be announced. Management at Hilton Reservations & Customer Care have attributed the decision to the lower telephone rates in other states, the greater supply of fluent European language speakers in other national centres, and to the ability of other national centres to operate more flexible employee working systems. Management at the firm have stated that the 120 employees affected by the decision will receive assistance in order to find alternative work. Affected employees will also be offered available opportunities at Hilton customer care sites in other states and at Hilton hotel branches in Estonia. Hilton Reservations & Customer Care have operated in Estonia since 2001.
