Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Jabil Circuit, a U.S based group that provides manufacturing services and solutions, is to cut between 200 and 230 jobs at its site in Brest. The decision to make redundancies follows the loss of a key contract for the production of circuit cards with the French telecommunications equipment manufacturer Alcatel. The contract is likely to be awarded to Solectron, a Chinese firm. Management at Jabil Circuit announced the series of redundancies to its works council on 29th August 2007. According to a trade union representative, the redundancies are to be implemented by June 2008. Jabil Circuit provides a range of services that include electronics and mechanical design, product management and after-market services. Its clients operate in a range of sectors that include the aerospace, automotive and telecommunications sectors.
