Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Analog Devices, an electronics manufacturer, is to make to 150 redundancies at its plant in Limerick. The redundancies follow a decision by the firm to phase out a facility at the plant that produced six-inch silicon wafers. Production is to be moved to a newer facility at the plant, capable of producing eight-inch wafers and a higher production yield. Analog Devices employ 1250 at the Limerick site, and the job losses will occur up until the end of 2008. Staff affected by the restructuring will receive a comprehensive redundancy package, medical benefits, enhanced pension rights for employees aged over 55, and support for those looking for new jobs.
Analog Devices is one of the longest-established high-tech multinationals in Ireland, having set up its Limerick base in the 1970s. The Limerick plant is the company's largest manufacturing base outside the U.S.
