Aer Lingus, the Irish airline, is to create 100 new jobs in Belfast with the launch of new flights from Belfast International Airport. The firm will invest 100 million GBP in the new flights, and will fly to eight new European routes. The airline claims the new flights will bring one million new passengers to the airport every year. Flights to Amsterdam, Barcelona and Geneva will begin in December 2007. Three daily flights to London Heathrow will follow in January 2008, with services to Budapest, Faro, Malaga and Rome starting in February 2008.
Northern Ireland First Minister Ian Paisley said that the announcement was very positive news for Northern Ireland. Junior minister Gerry Kelly said it was a tremendous boost for the local aviation industry.
