Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Office machinery and printing manufacturer Xerox has announced that up to 900 jobs will be lost at its Dublin site over the next eighteen months following an outsourcing deal with computer firm IBM. The job losses will be mainly comprised of call centre workers. Xerox had already announced in July that 900 of its staff were being transferred to IBM. IBM is already planning to outsource jobs to various lower cost economies such as India and Bulgaria. The staff concerned face redundancy or redeployment abroad. Redundancies will occur in two lots of 450 people over an 18 month period.
