Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Bortex Group announced on 21 June 2007 that it will lay off 113 employees as it is winding up its remaining production line on the island. The company had been responding to a continuous price pressure leading to a loss. However, the organisation stated that it will continue to use Malta as its operating base, employing 129 people. The Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) reported that a number of employers have already shown an active interest in recruiting the redundant workers.
The Maltese authorities had previously applied for aid from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF).
