Description

At the beggining of June 2007 Chemtura announced the closure of its factory in Pedrengo, in the province of Bergamo, where it produces intermediate chemical goods. All 175 employees will lose their jobs. The company has four plants and two administrative offices in Italy. The decision is part of a European reorganisation plan that envisages the closure of another factory in France with the consequent loss of 35 jobs and the reorganisation of the production cycle in the company’s plant in Ravenna, with the loss of a further 35 jobs. The company has taken this decision in order to tackle the increasing costs of raw materials, which are leading Chemtura to concentrate its production in those plants located in countries with lower labour and operative costs. Trade unions reacted to the company’s decision by going out on strike and involving in the dispute local and national authorities in order to find ways to avoid the redundancies provided by the reorganisation plan.
