Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Brivais Vilnis is one of the biggest fish-processing enterprises in Latvia, and, the biggest employer in the Limbazi region. Due to the fact that Russia closed the sprat market because of different quality norms in European Union and Russia, the enterprise has decided to stop the manufacturing from 24 June 2007 until 15 September 2007. Already before happened the enterprise has stopped the manufacturing for a month during the summer time to make a preventive maintenance of the machines. However the planned discontinuity for this summer is much longer. The enterprise considers transferring its manufacture to the seasonal basis. After 24 June 2007 the enterprise gradually will dismiss 400 employees. The unemployment rate at the Limbazi region on March 2007 was 6.6%, and it was among the lowest in the whole Latvia. The specialists consider, that dismissed employees will shortly afterwards find new job, because skilled are in demand.
