Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Vivendi's mobile telephone unit SFR announced on 23 May 2007 that SFR Service Client, the subsidiary in charge of customer relations, is planning to transfer three of its call centres to two subcontractors: Teleperformance and Division Arvato Services. The call centres to be transferred are located in Lyon (582 staff), Toulouse (724 staff) and Poitiers (571 staff), SFR Service Clients said in its press release. The company said the announcement was made to employee representatives on 23 May and that the subcontractors had agreed to guarantee jobs at the sites 'for at least three years'. SFR Service Clients confirmed that the group was aiming to implement the transfer between August and December 2007, subject to agreement with unions. A spokesman for SFR said the deal did not constitute a sale, but rather the transfer of buildings and employment contracts to the two subsidiaries. Staff at the Lyon, Toulouse and Poitiers centres staged a walk out this morning, in reaction to the announcement, with employees at a fourth centre in Massy planning strike action.
