Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
200 employees will be dismissed from the Hódmezővásárhely hospital in Southern Hungary. The hospital is operated by the city council, therefore council representatives decided about the mass redundancy in an effort to contain mounting debts and control losses as a result of the government’s major restructuring of the entire healthcare system in Hungary. The dismissals affect about 20 doctors, 60 nurses and 120 employees working in administration, technical support and other areas. The decision was made now because of the currently available state funding for covering the costs of the dismissals (severance pay, etc.). The exact timeline of the dismissals, however, is not known yet. The Trade Union of Health and Social Workers (Egészségügyi Dolgozók Demokratikus Szakszervezete, EDDSZ) acknowledged that restructuring was necessary but contested its scale.
