Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Iarp is the European leader in the production of professional refrigerators. It is headquartered in Casale Monferrato, in the north-west of Italy, and it currently employs around 500 people. At the beginning of May 2007, the company announced its will to strengthen its position in national and foreign markets with the consequent increase of its production. For this reason, Iarp proposed to the trade unions to change the shiftwork schemes in order to use the plant in a more effective and efficient way. If the trade unions accept the new shift organisation, the company will create 150 new jobs. In the following weeks the company and the trade unions will meet in order to reach an agreement on the business expansion plan presented by the company.
