Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 27 April 2007, mobile phone producer Motorola announced its plans to cut 230 jobs at its production site in Flensburg. The production of UMTS devices will be shifted to Asia by fall 2007. Motorola currently employs approximately 2,500 people at four sites in Germany: Flensburg, Berlin, München and Taunusstein. The Flensburg plant was established in 1998 and is one of the most advanced mobile phone production plants worldwide, according to Motorola. The production of UMTS devices will be shifted to China because of the growing Asian market. "We have to move where the markets are", the CEO said. He expects only the production of higher priced mobile phones to stay in Germany. In June 2007 management and works council agreed on a social plan.
