Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Carrozzeria Bertone is the production centre of the Bertone Group, one of the most popular Italian car designers. Today, the group is a business enterprise able to propose ideas and products from the initial concept right through to production. The group is made of four companies (Carrozzeria Bertone; Stile Bertone; Bertone Engineering and Bertone Glass) and 2,355 employees. The Carrozzeria Bertone is located in Grugliasco (TO) and has 1,450 employees.
During the last two years, the production of the Carrozzeria Bertone has sharply decreased because of the crisis that has affected the main European car-makers. At the beginning of February 2007, the company announced the possible closure of the Grugliasco plant with the consequent loss of 1,450 jobs.
The trade unions reacted to the decision by going out on strike and blockading the factory gates for 70 days. The trade unions met the local public authorities several times in order to avoid the closure of the plant, with recourse to the “ordinary” Wage Guarantee Fund to absorb temporary variations in demand.
On 23 April 2007, the trade unions and the Pininfarina group (one of the leading service companies within the automotive sector) reached an agreement on the hiring of part of the Bertone’s personnel who could be involved in the closure of the Bertone plant located in Grugliasco. In the case of closure, 100 redundant workers will be hired by Pininfarina, that is headquartered in Turin. In Italy, this is one of the rare examples of agreements reached by the social partners in order to favour the outplacement of the redundant workers before the collective dismissals procedures have been officially announced.
Moreover, the trade unions announced further actions in order to gather more precise information on the Bertone’s reorganisation plan and to elaborate adequate solutions for the outplacement and redeployment of all the workers who could be affected by the plan.
