Description
Gasfire manufactures cooking stoves and ovens and is owned by the Candy group, one of the European leaders in the household appliance market. The Gasfire plant is located in Erba (Como) and has 133 employees. On 27 March 2007, Candy announced the decision to close the Gasfire plant within this year. The company has chosen to relocate the production in Turkey in order to reduce its operative costs, namely labour, which are significantly lower in Turkey than in Italy. The trade unions reacted to the company’s decision by going out on strike. In general, they express concerns about the industrial strategies of the Candy group regarding all its Italian plants and offices. For this reason, they demand the involvement of the local and national authorities with a view to find ways to avoid the redundancies and to obtain information on Candy’s industrial strategies.
