Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Founded in 2000, Peleriin Medicals is a producer of disposable surgery coats. The company will close down in April 2007 due to an abrupt decrease in volume of orders related to the changes that have taken place in the world market. The partner company of Peleriin Medicals in Germany is restructuring its production processes and also in the market of medical equipment Chinese companies with very low labour cost are preferred. All the 99 workers of the company will be laid off. The local Estonian Labour Market Board department considers that there are enough free jobs in the area - 308 at the end of March 2007 – but at the same time there are altogether 400 unemployed people registered in the county and the free jobs include posts that may not be accepted by the workers of Peleriin Medicals (e.g. cleaners for hotels).
