Trade unions and the management had finally reach an agreement on the number of direct dismissals and other reduction measures such as retirement. 124 people will be dismissed from the end of July until the end of the year and after the restructuration 388 workers will remain on the Fleurus site.
The management of AGC Automotive, subsidiary of the Japanese group Asahi Glass based in Fleurus in the French-speaking part of Belgium, announced its intention to proceed to a restructuring that will concern 381 workers. AGC Automotive, manufacturing windscreens, had already prominent collective redundancies in the past. In 2004, 249 jobs had been suppressed after a 105 days strike. For now, no strike notice has been announced by the unions trying to propose alternative solutions and to place the workers who will lose their job in other subsidiaries of the group. At present, the department that is most concerned by the redundancies is the tempered glass sector, not competitive enough in comparison to other glass manufacturers. The management explained its decision by the bad economical context in the automobile sector, the poor technical results in 2006 and the failure to reach the objectives fixed after the first restructuring.
