Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Swedish government has decided that Svensk kassaservice (Swedish Cashier Service), a subsidiary of Posten AB specialised in financial transactions such as deposits, withdrawals, and payments, will close in 2008. Approximately 1,400 employees, most of them women, will lose their jobs.
Transactions have decreased substantially in the last five years and only 1-2% of the Swedish population are using their services. The liquidation will start in the middle of 2008 and is expected to be finished by 31 December 2008. Posten AB will try to offer redeployment opportunities to affected employees in the framework of their programme 'Futurum'. Those employees aged over 58 will be offered retirement.
