Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Norwegian oil drilling group of companies, Seadrill, has its headquarter outside Stavanger. The group currently employs 2,500 people in Norway and owns 35 drilling units - rigs, ships and jack-up rigs -, 14 of which are currently being built. The group has activities in 14 countries and four continents and is the 6th largest drilling company in the world in market value.
Seadrill has recently experienced large growth and is likely to become the world leader after the aquisition of Smedvig. The company announced on 9 February 2007 that it is expecting to increase its global workforce to 7,500 by the end of 2009. The number will increase especially in 2008 when the new rigs are finished. About 800 of these new jobs will be created in Norway.
