Description

Virgin Media is to cut 149 jobs at a call centre it operates in Stockton. Virgin Media currently employs 450 people at the former NTL site at Preston Farm Business Park in Stockton. But it plans to consolidate customer service operations in Dudley, meaning a reduction of 149 staff on Teesside. The company said it hoped to offer those affected other roles on Teesside or relocation to sites at Dudley, Manchester and Birmingham. A Virgin Media spokeswoman said: 'We have placed 149 people at our Preston Farm Business Park in Teesside at risk of redundancy.'

He added: 'As part of our commitment to keep compulsory redundancies to an absolute minimum, we will be working with everyone affected by today's announcement to identify suitable redeployment opportunities within the business.'

'We realise this may be unsettling for employees, but we will do our utmost to redeploy as many affected employees as possible.'

Virgin Media was formed from the merger of cable TV firm NTL and Virgin Mobile. The firm's biggest shareholder is entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson. Virgin Media stressed the potential job losses were not connected to the company's legal row with satellite broadcaster BSkyB.
