Camden Council has announced plans to cut 350 jobs. The move has been justified as part of a need to cut costs. Council leader Keith Moffitt said the move would allow money to be spent on a new school and care for the elderly. Unison said the cuts were 'unjustified' and would affect the 'poorest and most vulnerable sections of the community'. Mr Moffitt said: 'We have listened to the people of Camden and they are telling us they don't want to pay any more council tax.'
'We think we really are making Camden a better and more effective council which provides good residents' services and a good place to work.'
The council has said the cuts will affect office staff but the union claims it will hit people working at play centres and hostels.
Unison representative David Eggmore said: 'We don't believe it's necessary. They have had the most generous settlement from the government of every London borough.'
