Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Webasto, the German manufacturer of car roofs, announced in September 2006 that it was to cut 280 jobs out of 2,500 jobs in Germany and a total of 450 jobs worldwide following a restructuring programme started in 2006. The decision of the restructuring is attributed to falling sales. The plan envisaged a reduction of costs by 1.4 million euro until 2008. Half a year later, in February 2007, the company said that the programme was expected to be implemented by the end of 2007 and that direct dismissals were sought to be avoided in Germany.
