Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Belgian division of Alcatel-Lucent, the worldwide telecommunications components manufacturer, announced on 12 February 2007 that around 140 of 1,844 people employed in Namur and Anvers would lose their jobs in 2007. The employees of Evere and Geel are not concerned by the current restructuring. Alcatel employs 2,200 people in Belgium. To recall, on 9 February 2007, the Franco-American group confirmed that the company would cut between 12,000 and 13,000 employees worldwide, following severe net losses and a steep decline in sales in the fourth quarter of 2006.
