Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
A engineering firm in Northampton which employed more than 300 people is due to close at the end of the week. Widney Cabs Ltd, in Far Cotton, went into administration on 22 January with the immediate loss of 84 jobs. A further 100 went on 2 February.
On Wednesday, the administrators Baker Tilly said the business, which had a 32 million GBP turnover in 2006, was likely to close for good this week. The company makes cabs for construction and agricultural vehicles.
Bob Scott, of the Amicus union, representing workers at the site, said there will be 300 jobs lost in total.
Hundreds of jobs were lost in 2003 and 2004 when the company, then called Airflow Streamlines - which employed 600 staff, went into administration before it was bought by Widney.
