The copper mining company Cuprumin Abrud, the last one operating in the Arad County, has been closed and all 750 employees are going to lose their jobs. The sub prefect of Alba County announced on 1 February 2007 that approximately 180 of the 750 dismissed employees will be hired for maintenance of the facilities and to avoid environmental damage. Another 100 people will also be hired as whatchmen to protect the equipment and the buildings of the company. This restructuring is part of the privatisation process of the company. The authorities estimate that the negotiations for privatisation will be finalised in the following months.
